Carrier has been with the 49ers since 2013, appearing in 16 games for the team over two seasons. He had nine catches for 105 yards in 2014. Carrier had signed a two-year extension with the team back in March.
On Tuesday, the 49ers traded away TE Asante Cleveland to the New England Patriots for OL Jordan Devey. It was also revealed then that a team or teams may have also been interested in Carrier.
The 49ers did have an abundance of tight ends on the team. Remaining on the roster are Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek, Blake Bell, Xavier Grimble, and Busta Anderson.
The first to report the trade was Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.
According to Cam Inman of The Mercury News, the trade appeared to be news to head coach Jim Tomsula, who was unaware of the trade following the team's practice this afternoon.
The transaction was also confirmed by Washington themselves.
