There has been much speculation and debate over the San Francisco 49ers' coaching decisions this offseason. It looked as though the team would bring in Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, but there was a sudden halt on that plan and the team went with 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula instead.

In a Mercury News article today, Tim Kawakami discusses where things fell apart with the team's pursuit of Gase.


In short, the 49ers' pursuit of Gase was very real and there were reports that the team had a deal in place to make him the new head coach after 49ers general manager Trent Baalke and Gase met for over seven hours in Colorado.

Gase was down to the details on who his coordinators would be and his choices were approved by the 49ers. Tomsula's name was not involved. It looked like the deal would go through.

The next morning, Gase was informed by the 49ers that he could only have the job if Tomsula was named his defensive coordinator. Gase said no and that was the end of it.

Gase went on to become the offensive coordinator for the Bears joining former 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who became the defensive coordinator for Chicago.
