While his role has not been officially determined, there was much speculation that Tarver might be asked to join the 49ers as Tomsula's defensive coordinator.
Tarver has been the defensive coordinator with the Raiders since 2012. In 2011, he was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Stanford. From 2001 to 2010, he was on the 49ers' staff, where he served as an offensive quality control coach, assistant running backs coach and offensive assistant, and outside linebackers coach. He served with Tomsula for four years with the 49ers and coached a young Patrick Willis.
While Tarver's Raiders defenses never ranked above 28th in points allowed or 18th in yards allowed during his three seasons as their defensive coordinator, it is important to note that he had far less talent to work with while in Oakland.
