Newsom went on to say that there was no truth to the rumored link between the construction of a new stadium and San Francisco's bid at hosting the 2016 Olympics. He stated that the stadium would be built years before the Olympics and that its construction would simply be an advantage to getting the Olympics in San Francisco.
He feels that the stadium will be built by 2011 or 2012 and hopes for it to be ready for the 2012 NFL season.
"Everybody loves to take cheap shots at the Yorks, but this has been a difficult transition. There have been all kinds of issues with the family. All the dust has finally settled. Now it gives them the opportunity to get back, get focused on all these big things. And the last year, two years frankly, they have been focused on it and the sincerity...it's real...and it's a big deal to them," said Newsom.
It appears that plans are so far along that the team could have announced it already; it is just a timing issue. He feels that the fans will love the new stadium design.
For years, fans have been wanting a new stadium to replace the outdated Monster Park (still Candlestick Park to most fans). Hopefully within the next few weeks, fans will have a new stadium plan to look forward to.
