Goldson was drafted by San Francisco in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
Another team could still attempt to sign Goldson, and the 49ers would have the option to match any offer. If they could not, the team would receive two first round draft picks as compensation, making it unlikely another team would go after Goldson. The franchise tag will guarantee Goldson will receive a one-year contract worth the average of the top five paid players at his position over the past five seasons.
In 2011, Goldson, who is 27, had 67 tackles for the 49ers with six interceptions, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He was also voted to his first career Pro Bowl.
