Significant chatter has surrounded San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones, largely because of the injuries to starting quarterbacks around the NFL during the first two weeks of the season.

Some have wondered whether other teams have called the 49ers about Jones, who played impressive, gutsy football last season while temporarily filling in for an injured Brock Purdy. Jones appears to have resurrected his NFL career under head coach Kyle Shanahan and is once again viewed as a starting-caliber quarterback.

Of course, after watching other quarterbacks go down around the league—and dealing with their own quarterback situation last season—the 49ers know how valuable a capable backup is behind their starter.

49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning. He was asked whether he could confirm if teams have inquired about Jones amid injuries across the league.

"I'm going to leave that alone," Lynch said. "What I will tell you is I think a lot of people see all of that and say, 'Okay, there's opportunity.' It also tells you we're very fortunate to have a guy like Brock, franchise quarterback. But then to have a guy like Mac, in the event, there's no more important position in football. They're all important, but I think we know, as your quarterback goes, so goes your team.

"And so, I think it's a really special situation to have Brock here, to have Mac here, and then to have a guy we're really excited about with Kurtis Rourke.

"And I think back to Bill Walsh, and maybe he was onto something when he had Joe Montana, but he also brought Steve Young in here, and had Steve Bono behind them. So, it's a good position to be in a position of strength at, and it provides opportunities in a number of ways. The most important way being you're well insulated in the event something were ever to happen."

While Lynch did not confirm whether the 49ers have received trade inquiries about Jones, he emphasized the value of having a strong quarterback room and made it clear that the team is happy with its current situation.

Jones is also a locker room favorite, and Lynch believes the veteran quarterback's presence has even had an impact on Purdy.

"We're very fortunate to have Mac," Lynch added. "The guy's so fun to watch play. He got in there the other day—you saw him with that spin move. But the energy he brings to practice every day, I actually think it brings personality out of Brock.

"I mean, that's got to be a fun room to live in, and I know that it is. There's a ton of personality, and then, also, really good players at that position, too. So, we're very happy with our group."

Will the 49ers be active in the trade market?

Even if the 49ers are unwilling to trade their backup quarterback, that doesn't mean the team isn't actively looking for opportunities to improve its roster through the trade market.

"I think you're always looking at the candidates, at least," Lynch said. "Now, things don't tend to heat up unless you're looking at the New York Giants, who lost their starting quarterback. I'm sure they're actively making calls.

"But that's part of your job, to look at people who can improve you, and you just look at our history, and from big splash moves like [RB] Christian McCaffrey to little subtle ones like a [DE] Charles Omenihu, that really picked up our team one year.

"There's a variety of ways to do it, and we've shown that we'll be active if the opportunity presents itself, and it's right, and you can work out a deal, certainly, we'll always be looking at those things."

Lynch's comments suggest the 49ers remain open to exploring the trade market, though Jones may not be part of any deal. With the team at 2-0, San Francisco may believe it can afford to be selective as it evaluates potential moves.
