The move was part of a series of roster transactions, and West joins fellow 2025 draft pick Alfred Collins, also a defensive tackle, on injured reserve. However, there is an important distinction between the two injuries. Collins suffered a patellar tendon tear that ended his season, while the 49ers expect West to return.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on Wednesday and provided some insight into West's injury.
"I think a bone chip. A bone chip [in his knee]," Shanahan said.
When asked if the injury could end West's season, Shanahan said, "No. I believe he's getting surgery. But no, it's not a season-ender. So, hope to get him back sometime."
Shanahan was also asked how long West has been dealing with the issue.
"He had something in camp," Shanahan said. "I don't know if this is the same or if it was something new, but it was bothering him a lot after the game."
Several 49ers won't practice on Wednesday
Shanahan revealed that several players will not practice on Wednesday, including wide receiver Mike Evans, who is dealing with a hip injury; James Thompson Jr. and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, who are expected to miss several weeks with high-ankle sprains; and rookie defensive end Romello Height, who injured his hand against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
When asked for more details about Evans' hip injury, Shanahan said, "I'm not sure. Just know it's a hip injury."
Height underwent surgery on his hand, but the 49ers previously believed he still had a chance to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
"He's still an option," Shanahan said. "I hear he came out good, so we'll see how he heals up this week. Outside chance he could be available."
Additionally, defensive end Nick Bosa, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, running back Christian McCaffrey, and tackle Trent Williams will rest instead of practicing on Wednesday.
