Samuel has always been viewed as one of the most versatile offensive weapons in the NFL. However, that versatility would need to extend beyond the offense in 2026.
The 49ers also wanted Samuel to handle kickoff returns, and the veteran wide receiver showed he could make an impact there, too. He returned two kickoffs for 74 yards in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams, including a 45-yard return to open the second half.
49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning. He discussed Samuel's early impact and what his expanded role could mean for the rest of the season.
On offense, Samuel lined up at multiple positions, reminiscent of his previous seasons with the 49ers before his one-year stint with the Washington Commanders.
"I think [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] and [offensive coordinator] Klay [Kubiak] and that offensive staff gets very creative in using him, and it was just fun to see him out with his guys," Lynch said. "At the end of the game, I came to the sidelines, and I just happened to be standing there, and all of a sudden it's me, [LB] Dre [Greenlaw], and Deebo.
"And I said, 'Man, it's nice to have you guys back.' It just feels right. Those guys are Niners, and they left for a little bit, and they said it's good to be home. And that was a really a cool moment because those guys embody a lot of who we've been as a team, and they make us better, and it's great to have them back."
Samuel should continue to have opportunities following the news that standout rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling is expected to miss about 10 weeks after undergoing ankle surgery.
Samuel finished last week's game with six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown on seven targets. He also had one carry for 12 rushing yards.
With Stribling sidelined, Samuel's versatility will be even more valuable for the 49ers. His ability to contribute as a receiver, runner, and returner gives Shanahan and the offensive staff more options throughout the season.
