Knox recently examined every NFL team's most important 2027 free agent entering week one, taking into account past production, upside, projected role, and positional value. He acknowledged that it's an early projection and that plenty can change between now and next offseason.
For the 49ers, Knox landed on Brown. But is he the best choice? There are other players who could have made a strong case for the honor. Knox named a couple of them.
"Mac Jones might be the best backup quarterback in the league," he wrote. "After last season's performance as a spot-starter, though, he's likely to receive starting opportunities—and starter money—in free agency. Jake Brendel, meanwhile, is a very good starting center, though he'll turn 35 near the start of next season."
According to Knox, that leaves Brown as a young player who has established himself as a starter at an important position. "With those factors considered, safety Ji'Ayir Brown appears to be the right choice here," Knox wrote. "He's been a regular starter since his 2024 sophomore season; he's allowed a career opposing passer rating of only 87.1 in coverage, and he won't turn 27 until January."
Knox also believes Brown could be part of the 49ers' future as some of the team's current stars approach the latter stages of their careers.
But many 49ers fans would disagree. While Brown has shown enough to make this conversation worthwhile, he hasn't exactly been a model of consistency. There have been games in which Brown has struggled in coverage. There have also been missed tackles and questionable decisions that have turned what should have been routine defensive plays into much bigger problems.
We saw another example Thursday night in Melbourne. The 49ers defeated the Rams 27-7, but Los Angeles had an explosive play that helped set up its only touchdown of the game. Puka Nacua caught a pass near the right sideline, and Brown had an opportunity to break up the pass or make the tackle, limiting the gain.
Instead, Brown whiffed, and Nacua turned the play into a 41-yard gain, taking the Rams all the way down to the San Francisco eight-yard line. The Rams scored shortly afterward.
That's the frustrating part of Brown's game. The talent is there. The physical ability is there. But there are moments when he does something that leaves you wondering what he was seeing.
And then some plays remind you why the 49ers continue to give him opportunities. Late in Thursday night's blowout win, Brown delivered a big hit while helping bring down Rams receiver Jordan Whittington. He finished the game with four tackles, including two solo tackles.
That's Brown in a nutshell. He can make plays. He can hit. And he can also blow it.
He's also already shown that he can make big plays in big games. As a rookie, Brown intercepted Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. So it's not difficult to see what Knox sees. He's been a starter for just over two seasons. And if he can become more consistent, there's a path for him to be a long-term piece in San Francisco's secondary.
But is Brown the 49ers' most important pending free agent? There are others, like Jones, Brendel, Dre Greenlaw, and Kyle Juszczyk. Maybe Knox is right, and it's Brown. The talent is obvious. The consistency is still the question.
