Shanahan was previously under contract through the 2027 season. While Pelissero did not disclose details of the new deal, he shared the following:
"Now, one of the NFL's top coaches is locked up for years to come."
Before joining the 49ers, Shanahan spent over a decade establishing himself as one of the league's premier offensive minds. He began his NFL coaching career as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004 before moving to the Houston Texans, where he became the NFL's youngest offensive coordinator in 2008 at age 28.
Shanahan went on to serve as offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins (2010–2013) and Cleveland Browns (2014) before taking over the Atlanta Falcons' offense in 2015, where he earned NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2016.
The 49ers hired Shanahan as head coach in 2017, and he is now in his 10th season with the organization. He has compiled an 83-67 regular-season record and a 92-72 overall record, including the playoffs. Under his leadership, the 49ers have earned five playoff berths, captured three NFC West division titles, and made two Super Bowl appearances.
Shanahan, 46, and the 49ers kicked off their 2026 campaign with a convincing upset victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, opening the season 1-0.
The 49ers will next face the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, September 20, at Levi's Stadium.
