San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams spoke to reporters after the team's second full practice of the week as the team prepares for its Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.

Williams has long been one of Brock Purdy's biggest supporters, and he gave his starting quarterback a huge compliment Tuesday (Monday in the United States), calling him the heart and soul of the 49ers.


"I think you look up the definition of 'leader,' I think Brock Purdy's picture is probably there," Williams said. "He's been a leader ever since he stepped on the field, being Mr. Irrelevant, last pick in the draft. From playing with the threes all the way to playing with the ones, he's been the same person. Been very constant.

"Very, very confident to have a guy like that in the huddle. He commands the huddle. He never gets rattled. And some of the throws he makes under pressure is just nothing short of phenomenal.

"He's a treat to watch. So, I'm excited for the Aussie fans to get their first glimpse of him. But he's the heart and soul of this team."

Purdy is one of eight team captains for the 2026 season. The fifth-year quarterback quickly earned the respect of his teammates after taking over as the 49ers' starter during his rookie campaign.

A turf toe injury limited Purdy to nine games last season, but he still completed 69.4% of his passes for 2,167 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.


Purdy's career 104.0 passer rating is currently on pace to become the best mark in NFL history.

Trent Williams downplays narrative around different travel strategies


The 49ers arrived in Melbourne last week, giving the team plenty of time to acclimate to the new time zone, which is 17 hours ahead of California.

The Rams are taking a different approach. Los Angeles won't arrive in Melbourne until just one day before kickoff.

Williams explained how long it took him to adjust to the time difference and downplayed the significance of the two teams' contrasting travel strategies.

"Probably like after about 48 hours, 36 hours or so, it kind of started to feel a little normal," Williams said. "And after about probably three, four days, it started to feel really normal."


Does that mean the 49ers could have a significant advantage over the Rams on game day?

"It's, to me, tomato (to-may-to), tomato (to-mah-to)," Williams said. "It's whatever you believe in. The good thing about it is, when you play a game, you've got a lot of adrenaline, so I don't think that would be the biggest factor, as people think so."

It appears likely that defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who put his retirement on hold to sign a one-year deal with his former team, the Rams, will suit up for the Week 1 matchup against the 49ers. However, his status has not yet been confirmed.

If Donald does play, Williams doesn't expect much of a drop-off from the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

"I wouldn't be the one to say he'd be slower or any different than the last time we've seen him," Williams said. "That's what I would expect. I'm older than he is, so it ain't like I expect him to come back old and slower.


"I think he walked away from the game on his own terms, and it looks like he's coming back on his own terms. And no, I expect him to be the same 99 that the league grew to fear."

Williams' comments underscore the respect Donald still commands around the NFL. If the Rams' star defensive tackle does return against the 49ers, San Francisco's offensive line will have one of the league's most difficult challenges waiting for it in Melbourne.
