Evans has been one of the most consistent wide receivers in NFL history, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 NFL seasons, tying a record previously set by Jerry Rice. However, Evans was unable to extend that streak in 2025 after injuries limited him to just eight games.
The 49ers held their first full practice in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday morning (Sunday night for those following in the States) ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. Evans was among the players who participated, signaling that the veteran receiver is on track to play in the NFC West showdown.
Evans is entering his 13th NFL season and his first with a team other than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After practice, Evans was asked about his recent setbacks and didn't sound overly concerned.
"I think the training staff, they did a great job working with me," Evans told reporters in Melbourne. "I know I'm an older player. I've had probably over 1,000 football practices in my life now. So I know what I'm doing out there, and they know what they're doing. They did a good job taking care of me.
"None of my injuries were significant. If it was a game week, I wouldn't have missed any time."
Mike Evans chooses the 49ers' unsung hero
For those not yet familiar with 49ers rookie De'Zhaun Stribling, that may quickly change. Evans selected the young wide receiver as the team's unsung hero heading into the 2026 season.
Stribling has certainly been making a name for himself early. The rookie has been a standout throughout training camp and the preseason and appears to be ahead of schedule in his development. Many believe Stribling could develop into a long-term option as a boundary weapon for quarterback Brock Purdy.
"He's going to be a great player, and he's going to help us out a lot this year," Evans said.
The veteran receiver also explained what makes Stribling so special and why the first-year wideout could be poised for early success.
"You all saw a snippet of it in the preseason, but he's an ultimate playmaker," Stribling said. "He's physical, he's tough, great hands, really smart, and he's low maintenance."
When asked if Stribling can eventually take over the X receiver role, Evans didn't hesitate.
"Whatever he wants to be, I'm sure he can," Evans said. "He has the skill set to do it all. So, he won't be limited in any capacity. He'll be able to play wherever he wants."
