The San Francisco 49ers are making an intriguing addition to their practice squad. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the 49ers are signing former Buffalo Bills cornerback and return specialist Brandon Codrington.

Codrington is more than just a defensive back, however. He has also established himself as a return specialist, which is likely what caught the 49ers' attention.

Codrington entered the NFL in 2024 as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets after playing college football at North Carolina Central. He was traded to the Bills ahead of his rookie season and totaled 619 return yards on 38 attempts in 2024, earning a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team.

The Bills released Codrington on November 15, 2025, and he subsequently signed a future contract with the Houston Texans in February 2026. Houston released him on Sunday as part of its 53-man roster cutdown, and Wilson previously suggested that Codrington had a chance to return to the Texans' practice squad.

Codrington recorded 433 total return yards on 24 attempts with the Bills last season before being released. While his primary value has come on special teams, he has also seen limited action on defense, playing just 79 defensive snaps across 21 career games. He has recorded nine tackles and one pass defensed during his NFL career, all with Buffalo.

For the 49ers, adding Codrington gives the team another intriguing option in the return game while providing potential depth in the secondary.
