Kicker Eddy Piñeiro is the lone specialist (kicker, punter, long snapper) on the roster.
The moves are likely temporary, as the 49ers are expected to continue making roster maneuvers. Waitman and Weeks could have a handshake agreement to return once the team makes additional moves.
Additionally, the 49ers placed two offensive linemen, Brett Toth and Nick Zakelj, on the season-ending injured reserve (IR) list.
Toth has been dealing with a concussion, while the nature of Zakelj's injury remains unclear. Zakelj played 46 offensive snaps in the 49ers' preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.
NFL rules allow only two players to be placed on injured reserve with a designation to return. The 49ers have reserved those spots for wide receiver Christian Kirk (calf) and offensive lineman Austen Pleasants (knee).
Running back Isaac Guerendo (pectoral) and defensive lineman Mykel Williams (ACL) landed on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list, forcing them to miss at least the first four games of the season.
