There has been no shortage of pressure placed on Brock Purdy heading into the 2026 season. After signing a massive long-term contract last year, Purdy is no longer the surprise seventh-round quarterback trying to prove he belongs. He is now firmly established as the San Francisco 49ers' franchise quarterback, and with that comes the expectation that he should lead the team to a Super Bowl Championship.

But according to former 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci, who sat down with casino.org/us, calling 2026 a "prove-it" season for Purdy would be unfair. Mariucci believes Purdy has already proven plenty.


"I think he has the ability to be successful this season despite the injuries around him," Mariucci said. "However, it's not a make-or-break season for him. He signed a long-term contract; he's a $50 million-plus guy. He's not going anywhere. He is their leader, and he's the guy that will make the Niners tick."

Instead, Mariucci's biggest concern surrounding Purdy has little to do with Purdy himself. It is the collection of new faces he'll be throwing to. The 49ers' wide receiver room looks dramatically different than it did a year ago.

San Francisco still has Demarcus Robinson, but they upgraded the wide receiver room this offseason by adding veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk. Additionally, the 49ers spent a second-round pick on De'Zhaun Stribling. There's more talent in Santa Clara now, but it also means Purdy has a lot of new relationships to build.

"The receivers had 10 touchdowns last year. Jauan Jennings had nine of them, and now he's gone," Mariucci said. "Kendrick Bourne has also gone, and Skyy Moore, and even Brandon Aiyuk, who has been missing. So, you've got to replace these guys. It's not just replacing them and getting a body in there; it's the training that goes with it. It's the reps throwing routes with these new guys."

The 49ers can add as much talent as they want, but talent alone doesn't automatically create chemistry between a quarterback and his receivers. Timing, route adjustments, anticipation and trust all have to be developed.


And that's where Mariucci believes Purdy could face his biggest challenge early in the season. "Mike Evans is new and so is Christian Kirk. Stribling, the kid from Ole Miss that they drafted in the second round, he's brand new, and they're counting on him," Mariucci added. "There's a lot of pressure on these new guys, and they're counting on them to be the top guys."

The good news for Purdy is that he still has two of the most important pieces of Kyle Shanahan's offense in Christian McCaffrey and, eventually, George Kittle. Mariucci believes that will help, but he also expects the passing game to take some time to fully develop. "My concern with Brock Purdy is the passing game," Mariucci said. "Luckily, he still has Kittle and McCaffrey, but getting in rhythm with timing with the new receiving core is going to take some time."

That may be one of the biggest storylines to watch once the regular season begins. The 49ers have a talented group of pass catchers, but several of their most important pieces are learning how to play together for the first time. Purdy himself has expressed excitement about the new-look receiving corps, particularly the additions of Evans and Kirk. "September needs to be about getting rhythm and a fast start," Mariucci added.

And then there's the Super Bowl pressure. But Mariucci doesn't believe Purdy will be overwhelmed by that expectation. "I guess it's the Super Bowl," Mariucci said. "When he walks through the Niners building and sees five Super Bowl trophies, does that put pressure on him or does it serve as motivation? I believe he just thinks of it as an honour to be representing the 49ers as their quarterback, making his own legacy and playing for an organisation that has a history of winning."

Mariucci also believes Purdy's mentality is one of his biggest strengths. "He thinks straight, and he's got the right attitude, and I think he takes it all in stride, so I know he'll be brilliant," he continued.


And while there will be questions about whether Purdy can take the final step and deliver the sixth Lombardi Trophy to the organization, Mariucci doesn't seem to have much doubt that the quarterback is capable of doing so. "He can win the Super Bowl this season with this team around him," Mariucci said. "He could have won the last Super Bowl he was in. They were winning the game, and then they just got edged out right at the end. So, heck yeah, he's good enough to win a Super Bowl and so is his team."

That's what makes the 2026 season so fascinating for Purdy. It isn't necessarily about proving he belongs. He's already done that.

Now it's about seeing what he can do with a new supporting cast, and a team that believes it has enough talent to make another run at the Super Bowl. Purdy's contract may have changed the expectations surrounding him, but Mariucci's message is pretty clear: The 49ers didn't give Purdy that contract because they were still trying to figure out whether he was their quarterback. They gave it to him because they're certain he is.
