Head coach Kyle Shanahan provided several injury updates after the game, including more information on the 49ers' backup quarterback. He was asked if Rourke could miss time.
"I'm not sure," Shanahan said. "They said ribs. He was struggling to breathe, so they took him to the hospital just to check on everything, make sure it's all right. X-rays in here didn't show it was broken or anything, but we'll see what we find out tomorrow."
Shanahan did not rule out the possibility that the 49ers could sign another quarterback. However, the team will wait to learn more about Rourke's status before making a final decision.
Rourke was examined in the blue medical tent before leaving the field and heading to the locker room for further evaluation.
"We were worried he was banged up on that draw," Shanahan said. "We were trying to look at him. We were yelling to him. He was saying he was fine. Then when he got to the sidelines after we scored, then they said they needed to take him in to look at a rib. They said that it didn't seem broken on the first X-ray, but they kept him in there.
"And then at halftime, they said they wanted to take him to the hospital just because he was struggling with some breath stuff, so you've got to look [into that]. When you don't see something on an X-ray, and someone's struggling with something, then you just got to go cover your bases and look for more."
Other 49ers injury updates
Shanahan also provided updates on several other 49ers players following Thursday night's preseason opener.
Cornerback Jack Jones, who has been one of the standout players during 49ers training camp, suffered a hand injury during the Titans' first offensive drive. He did not return to the game.
Linebacker Nick Martin suffered a stinger but returned to action.
Safety Marques Sigle suffered an oblique injury and did not return.
Shanahan also revealed that cornerback Nate Hobbs did not suit up for Thursday night's game after suffering a groin injury during Tuesday's joint practice with the Titans. Hobbs is expected to miss a few weeks.
Note: This article has been edited to correct an initial error that stated wide receiver Jacob Cowing suffered an oblique injury. Cowing did not play in the game. The injury was actually sustained by safety Marques Sigle.
