Although the 49ers are not considered the favorites to win the division, players are embracing the opportunity to compete against two of the league's top teams.
"Those games have always meant more," linebacker Fred Warner said Monday morning during an interview with Bay Area radio station KNBR. "I feel like they've always counted as two, in my opinion. When you play these teams twice a year, and the importance of winning the division in terms of playoff positioning, and making your path easier to a Super Bowl, and having a chance at winning one, they do mean everything.
"And it's been so competitive in our division for a really long time, and I think it's at its height right now with the amount of talent across the board with those teams."
Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, meanwhile, remains confident in what the 49ers can accomplish and isn't focused on what other teams in the NFC West are doing.
"We're not really focused on them," Lenoir said in his own radio interview. "We're just worried about ourselves. The only person that can beat the Niners is the Niners."
For Warner, the challenge of facing the Seahawks and Rams twice each season is exactly what makes the NFC West battles so meaningful. He views those matchups as an opportunity for the 49ers to measure themselves against the NFL's best.
"I love it. I wouldn't want it any other way," Warner said. "If you really want to make it to the top and hoist the trophy, you've got to go through the best of the best, and we have an opportunity to do that twice a year with each of those teams.
"At the end of the day, you've got to put the ball down, you've got to play ball. People want to crown different people early in the offseason or training camp and things of that sort. Listen, we're going to go out there, and we're going to play football at the end of the day, and we'll stick to that."
Another player confident in the 49ers' ability to compete with any team in the NFL is wide receiver Mike Evans. Although he joined San Francisco this offseason, the veteran receiver has already been impressed by the competitive mindset inside the locker room.
Evans, who won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, believes the 49ers have the talent needed to compete for a championship.
"I still feel like I can definitely be that piece to help this team get over the hump," Evans said. "Obviously, it's extremely hard to win a Super Bowl in the NFL. Only one team can win it, and there's going to be a lot of teams competing throughout the year. But just keep putting in the work and stack it."
The opportunity to compete for a championship was a major reason Evans chose to sign with the 49ers. The veteran receiver said San Francisco checked every box he was looking for in his next team, and believes the roster stacks up among the best he's been a part of.
"Trying to win now, quarterback, great skill players, great defense, great coaching staff, and just great organization," Evans said. "... They checked all the boxes, and I'm excited to be here."
With a loaded NFC West featuring multiple legitimate Super Bowl contenders, the 49ers know every divisional matchup will carry significant weight.
