In late July, when NFL teams are now upgrading from shorts and jerseys to padded practices, unless fans want more details on Aaron Rodgers's final season, the quarterback competitions in Minnesota or Atlanta, or how 10 head coaches will fare in their first season with their respective teams, there is not much NFL news to react to.

Earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made rare summer headlines. Veteran nose tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade. Entering his walk year on an extension he signed in 2022, Vea has posted solid numbers throughout his career. In eight seasons and over 100 starts, Vea has recorded 79 quarterback hits, 48 tackles for loss, and 35 career sacks. Throw in a two-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion, and reputation as one of the premier run stoppers in football, and there could be an opportunity for the 49ers to pounce.


Whether this trade request leads to a holdout, a restructured deal, or an extension, players of Vita Vea's caliber don't become available often. Given the offseason so far, which included social media jabs from Brandon Aiyuk to most recently Kyle Shanahan's injuries from his auto accident, the 49ers could use some legit positivity rather than hopeful optimism. At minimum, the 49ers should be in the mix to acquire Vita Vea.

Here are three reasons why the 49ers should trade for Vea.

West Coast team/Bay Area roots


Vea played his college ball at Washington, but was born and raised in Milpitas, CA, which is a quick Uber ride to Levi's Stadium. If Vea truly desires to be dealt to a West Coast team, there are options. Las Vegas and the Chargers have the cap space, but may be another year from contention. Seattle would be a Washington reunion, and the Rams are still hopeful for Aaron Donald to reunite with them after two years away.

Most of the 49ers' core players are aging but still productive, so Vea (age 31) would fit that mold as a win-now move. An early and late pick plus a rotational player would be an example of a deal that Tampa Bay might find attractive.

Adds Depth to Position of Strength


Nick Bosa is at left edge with Mykel Williams rotating with Sam Okauayinonu, Keion White, and rookie Romello Height at right edge. Osa Odighizuwa is one of the starting nose tackles with C.J. West and rookie Gracen Halton rotating, depending on down and distance. As of now, Alfred Collins is the other interior starter. Although the statistics don't look impressive, Collins has offered consistent run defense, but a nagging shoulder injury has sidelined him as camp begins.


Vea doesn't usually come off the field, so opportunities for Halton and West to contribute early will be limited, and Collins, despite his upside, would be rotated in on pass rush situations to accommodate Vea. Acquiring Vea would turn the defensive line from above average to elite.

Combat Rams/Seahawks


After trading for cornerback Trent McDuffie and defensive end Myles Garrett, the Rams are an embarrassment of riches and deemed Super Bowl favorites by many pundits. The Seahawks are the defending Super Bowl champions, and appear to be running it back with their squad intact—with the exception of Kenneth Walker III.

In the most competitive division, big transactions don't usually tip the scales, but they certainly could put all three teams in the NFC West on a more level playing field, depending on the player acquired. Vita Vea fits that category.
