The San Francisco 49ers are facing another setback at wide receiver, as Ricky Pearsall continues to deal with lingering effects from the PCL injury that limited him last season.

Pearsall is experiencing swelling in his knee and is expected to miss time. Multiple reports indicate there is concern within the organization, with the 49ers exploring all options—including the possibility of surgery.


It's not the update fans were hoping for regarding Pearsall, who has missed 14 games over his first two NFL seasons. After entering the league as a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the 2026 campaign was expected to be a pivotal year for the young receiver.

An extended absence could also have long-term implications. The 49ers will eventually have to decide whether to exercise the fifth-year option on Pearsall's rookie contract, making his health and availability increasingly important from a financial standpoint.

The silver lining is that Pearsall's absence could create additional opportunities for several young receivers, including rookie De'Zhaun Stribling.

"He's a hell of a player," running back Christian McCaffrey said of Stribling on Wednesday. "He's got a great build, he's physical, he can run. And the more and more he can learn the playbook and learn this offense to where he's playing fast, he's going to be a hell of a player."

Pearsall had been expected to start opposite veteran Mike Evans this season. If he misses significant time, the 49ers will need other receivers to step into larger roles. Veteran Christian Kirk can play outside, although he is also working through an injury—a calf strain. That could open additional snaps for Stribling, whether in the slot or on the boundary as his development continues.


Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has already noticed significant progress from the team's younger receivers, including Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing.

"I just see a lot of growth across the board," Kubiak said. "And those guys come out every day with the right mindset. They're on their assignments, they're working, they're competing, and it's going to be fun to watch that room kind of become what it does over this next however many weeks of training camp.

"It's one of the positions where we have a lot of competition, and I'm excited to see where it goes."

McCaffrey believes the younger receivers can accelerate their development by learning from Evans, one of the NFL's most accomplished wideouts.

"For a young guy to come into a receiver room and have somebody like that as a mentor—I hope those guys take it and run with it because that's a special guy, special player, and glad he's on our team," McCaffrey said.


Right tackle Colton McKivitz has also been impressed by the group's willingness to embrace one of the less glamorous responsibilities of playing wide receiver in Kyle Shanahan's offense—blocking.

"So for a guy like Stribling to come in and already be doing that, you're seeing Jacob Cowing doing it, Malik Turner doing it—so guys who are doing this already in camp," McKivitz said. "We'll see. In two days, pads come on, we'll see if it keeps going, but I got a lot of confidence in those guys that it will."

If Pearsall is unable to contribute, the 49ers could explore adding another veteran receiver. For now, however, his absence creates more opportunities for the team's younger wideouts to gain valuable training camp reps and make their case for a larger role.
