But for three young receivers, De'Zhaun Stribling, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins, training camp could provide exactly what they need: opportunities. And those opportunities may come sooner and more often than expected.
Evans, a six-time Pro Bowler entering his 13th NFL season, is clearly one of the most established players on San Francisco's roster. The 32-year-old doesn't need to prove much during training camp. His role on the team is already secure, and the 49ers could presumably be smart about managing his workload, including giving him veteran rest days when necessary.
Add to that Kirk, who is already missing time due to a calf strain suffered during the team's first training camp practice. While the severity of the injury remains unclear, any missed practice time creates additional opportunities for the young receivers behind him. Those reps are valuable, especially for Cowing and Watkins, whose roster spots are not guaranteed.
Stribling's spot on the team is safe, considering his being in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He has already drawn positive attention from the coaching staff. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster, who has been overseeing practice while Kyle Shanahan recovers from his injuries, praised Stribling's maturity, strength, and football intelligence.
QB Brock Purdy spoke glowingly about Stribling on KNBR radio Monday morning. "Dude is a baller, and I mean that," Purdy said. "It's hard to say that for a rookie right off the jump, but just seeing him run routes, going up against defenders in OTAs and in camp yesterday. He's a great route runner. He's smart. He's learned the playbook really quick, which is awesome.
"On top of that, you can see his strength when he's going up against guys and creating separation. I'm like 'alright, this guy is a strong receiver', so I'm excited to see what he does. All of us, all the quarterbacks in the room, were like 'alright, this guy is gonna be a guy that comes in and plays'."
Cowing is entering his third NFL season and may have the most to gain from an extended look. His speed has always been his calling card, and he can bring a vertical element to the offense that few other receivers on the roster can match. He also has experience as a returner, giving him another avenue to earn a roster spot and potentially carve out a role.
Watkins, meanwhile, is another young receiver who needs to take advantage of every snap he gets. The second-year wideout has spent the early part of his career trying to establish himself in a crowded room. With Evans potentially receiving occasional veteran maintenance days and Kirk currently dealing with a calf issue, Watkins should have more chances to show what he can do.
Herein lies the beauty of training camp. A player doesn't need to be the best receiver on the roster to benefit from an opportunity. He needs to be ready when the opportunity arrives.
For Stribling, that means potentially showing he can be counted on as one of the team's top-three wide receivers. For Cowing and Watkins, that could mean more reps to win a roster spot. The opportunity is there. Now, it's up to the young receivers to do something with it.
