As training camp gets underway, the San Francisco 49ers are confident they won't miss a beat despite head coach Kyle Shanahan recovering from serious—but non-life-threatening—injuries sustained in a car accident. Much of that confidence stems from a strong coaching staff and the veteran leadership within the locker room.

General manager John Lynch revealed on Saturday that Shanahan is expected to make a full recovery, although he will have a limited role at the start of training camp. The expectation is that he'll be back on the sideline when the 49ers open the 2026 regular season against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.


While the public didn't learn about Shanahan's accident until Saturday, several of the team's leaders were informed shortly after the July 14 crash, which left the coach with a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, 40 stitches to his face, and a severe concussion.

Among the first players to reach out was All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner. Lynch shared the message Warner sent to his head coach in the aftermath of the accident.

"I was with Fred the other day ... Fred got back to Kyle right away, and his message was, 'We got this, Coach. We got this. Trust us,'" Lynch shared. "And so, absolutely, the Trent Williams, the Kyle Juszczyks, the Fred Warners, Christian McCaffreys, Brock Purdys, we've got tremendous leadership."

Shanahan, widely regarded as one of the NFL's premier offensive minds, is entering his 10th season as the 49ers' head coach. Although he won't immediately resume his full workload, the organization remains optimistic that he'll return to his normal responsibilities in the near future.

In the meantime, the 49ers remain focused on preparing for the season and pursuing a championship.


"We're not blinking," Lynch continued. "Our job is to be at our best. This team has had a focus all offseason that I've been very excited about. I know that we've improved our team, but what gives me a ton of confidence is our approach. And so, prior to this, the approach, the readiness, the preparation to be at our best, we understand that we play in a tremendous division that's going to be incredibly competitive."

San Francisco finished last season in third place in the NFC West. Despite an injury-riddled campaign, the team managed to win 12 regular-season games and earn a playoff berth.

With the Rams entering the season as the Super Bowl favorites and the Seattle Seahawks looking to defend their title, the 49ers understand the challenge that awaits them.

"We understand what we're going up against," Lynch said, "but we're more focused on being at our best, and we think that's going to be pretty damn good."

Backed by an experienced coaching staff and veteran leaders, the 49ers believe they're well-positioned to navigate Shanahan's temporary absence while maintaining their championship aspirations.
