The NFC West features the Super Bowl-favorite Los Angeles Rams and the defending champion Seattle Seahawks, making the path to a division title especially challenging for the 49ers.
One NFL insider believes the biggest question surrounding San Francisco isn't talent—it's age. The 49ers' veteran core remains one of the league's best, but after a season plagued by injuries, durability could determine whether the team can compete. Despite last year's setbacks, San Francisco still managed to reach the playoffs.
Will the wear and tear of an aging roster prove too much to overcome in 2026?
"The 49ers' age is notable and makes them as all in as their NFC West rivals in Los Angeles," Albert Breer wrote in a feature for Sports Illustrated. "Trent Williams is 38, Kyle Juszczyk is 35, George Kittle and Mike Evans are 32, Christian McCaffrey is 30, Fred Warner is 29, and Nick Bosa is 28. Can all those guys stay healthy?"
Kittle suffered an Achilles injury on January 11. Evans was limited to eight games last season due to hamstring and clavicle injuries. Warner is returning from a dislocated and fractured ankle, while Bosa is working his way back from a torn ACL.
Keeping that veteran core healthy will be critical to the 49ers' Super Bowl hopes. It's also fair to wonder how much longer the team's championship window will remain open with several cornerstone players nearing the latter stages of their careers.
Of course, general manager John Lynch may not be finished shaping the roster. The 49ers have never been afraid to make aggressive in-season moves if they believe a trade can strengthen their championship chances.
"Do the Niners have a big swing left in them before the trade deadline to give them their best shot? It's an interesting circumstance," Breer added.
