For years, the San Francisco 49ers have been defined by elite offensive playmakers, Kyle Shanahan's offensive system, and a defense built to win championships. But heading into the 2026 season, one NFL analyst believes the biggest strength on the roster may be sitting in the quarterback room. And for a franchise with multiple Hall of Fame QBs, that's the way it should be.

CBS Sports analyst Emory Hunt recently made a strong statement about San Francisco's quarterback situation, saying the 49ers have the most complete quarterback room in the NFC.


"This is the most complete quarterback room," Hunt said. "Any one of these guys, in my opinion, can step on that field and play really well for San Francisco."


That is a brow-raising endorsement in a conference that features quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, Matthew Stafford, Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, and others who have emerged as franchise-caliber players. But Hunt's argument is not necessarily that the 49ers have the single best quarterback in the NFC. Instead, he is highlighting something that has become increasingly valuable in today's NFL: depth and confidence in every quarterback on the roster.

Brock Purdy Has Already Proven He Can Win


At the top of the depth chart is Brock Purdy, who has already accomplished something rare for a young quarterback—leading a team to multiple deep playoff runs while playing in one of the league's most demanding systems. Purdy's biggest strength has always been his ability to process quickly, deliver accurately, and operate Shanahan's offense efficiently. He has shown he can make big-time throws in pressure situations and has earned the trust of the locker room.

The question entering 2026 is no longer whether Purdy belongs. It is whether he can stay healthy and continue taking the next step toward becoming one of the league's elite quarterbacks.

The Depth Behind Purdy Changes Everything


The reason Hunt's comments stand out is that San Francisco's quarterback room is not built like many teams. Behind Purdy, the 49ers have invested in quarterbacks who bring different skill sets and developmental upside, with Mac Jones leading the way among the backups. A strong QB2 gives a team confidence when injuries strike. And that's something San Francisco has had to deal with repeatedly over the past few seasons.


The 49ers have seen what happens when a season is derailed because the quarterback position cannot absorb an injury. Having multiple quarterbacks who understand the offense and can execute the system gives them something many contenders lack. Last season, Jones showed he can be that guy.

But Hunt also mentioned Adrian Martinez and Kurtis Rourke, saying the 49ers have four good quarterbacks, and that is why he ranked them ahead of other teams like Seattle.

Kyle Shanahan's System Makes Quarterback Development Possible


One major factor working in San Francisco's favor is the presence of Shanahan, who has consistently shown the ability to put quarterbacks in a position to succeed. His offense emphasizes timing, accuracy, decision-making, play-action, and creating opportunities through scheme. That does not mean every quarterback automatically becomes a star, but it does mean quarterbacks who fit the system can maximize their abilities.

Hunt's belief that "any one of these guys" can step in and play well speaks to the idea that the 49ers have built a strong quarterback room rather than relying on one player.

A Different Type of Quarterback Advantage


The NFL has become a league where quarterback depth matters more than ever. The NFL season is a physical grind, and teams rarely make it through a full year without needing contributions from backups. The 49ers learned that lesson the hard way in recent seasons.


A championship-caliber roster cannot simply have a great starter. It needs stability behind him. That is what makes Hunt's comments so interesting.
