It turns out, the organization may be exploring new locations.
The facility also sits next to an electrical substation, a topic that has generated discussion this offseason due to concerns about potential health effects from electromagnetic fields.
According to The Athletic's Vic Tafur, who recently spoke with 49ers CEO Al Guido, the team is considering relocating its practice facility. The potential move appears to be driven primarily by space constraints rather than concerns surrounding the nearby substation.
"They just put a lot of money into the weight room and hydrotherapy, as well as the locker room and cafe," Tofur wrote. "Additionally, they are exploring a possible nearby relocation as they are running out of space at and next to Levi's Stadium."
A move could address both issues, although the 49ers have expressed confidence in the findings of an independent study regarding the electrical substation.
"We did hire an independent scientist, and he basically [said] it was a big nothing burger. We're safe," general manager John Lynch said in March. "We're in a safe place of work. The levels are—I think I read in there—400 times less than unsafe zones, so it's a normal place of work, it's a normal gym. We are safe, we're healthy, and we feel really good about that."
It has always been a challenge to hold joint practices with other teams in Santa Clara due to the 49ers' limited space. Despite those constraints, San Francisco is scheduled to host the Tennessee Titans for a joint practice on August 11 ahead of the teams' preseason matchup at Levi's Stadium.
With several NFL franchises operating larger and more advanced training complexes, the 49ers may believe the time has come to pursue an upgrade.
H/t to Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated for the find.
