The San Francisco 49ers expect the eventual returns of Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams from ACL injuries to provide a significant boost to a pass rush that struggled to generate consistent pressure last season. The team also invested in the position during the offseason, selecting Romello Height in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

However, the 49ers may not be finished reshaping their pass-rush unit ahead of the 2026 season. After watching division rival Los Angeles add superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett, San Francisco could be motivated to explore additional ways to strengthen its defensive front.

One potential option, according to Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom, is Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith. The veteran defender has recorded 45 sacks during his six NFL seasons, including 9.5 sacks in 2025.

La Canfora reports that the 49ers are among several teams likely keeping an eye on the Highsmith situation in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers' edge-rushing group is headlined by T.J. Watt, and the team recently signed Nick Herbig to an extension. While Pittsburgh has shown no urgency to move Highsmith, a schematic shift could make him a trade candidate later this summer or before the NFL trade deadline.

"Highsmith has flashed strong pass-rush potential in the past, but has been unable to get home consistently," La Canfora wrote. "Getting with new coaches in a new scheme could help, and several teams were at least monitoring the Garrett situation, league sources pointed to Washington, Philadelphia, Buffalo, and San Francisco, who could well end up suitors for Highsmith."

La Canfora also noted that some around the league remain skeptical about quarterback Aaron Rodgers' ability to lead the Steelers to an AFC North title, a factor that could influence roster decisions if Pittsburgh falls short of expectations in 2026.
