The San Francisco 49ers head into the 2026 season with approximately $72 million in salary cap space, the most in the NFL by a wide margin, according to OverTheCap.com. The next-closest team, the Tennessee Titans, has nearly $50 million in available cap space.

However, much of that flexibility is expected to be carried over into future seasons. NFL teams can roll over salary cap space, and the 49ers are likely to need those funds as several key contracts increase in value over the coming years.


In fact, San Francisco is already projected to be roughly $34 million over the 2027 salary cap—before factoring in any adjustments.

According to Warren Sharp, the 49ers rank 25th among the most expensive defenses in 2026, with approximately $115 million allocated to the unit. That makes sense considering the team has the most overall cap space.


The Pittsburgh Steelers lead the NFL with $193 million allocated to their defense, while the Miami Dolphins rank last at $81.1 million.

Of the 10 players taking up the most salary cap space for the 49ers, six play on the offensive side, with quarterback Brock Purdy topping the list at nearly $24 million.

Pass rusher Nick Bosa carries a salary-cap hit of approximately $23 million, making him the most expensive defensive player on the roster.
