The relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers reportedly deteriorated during the receiver's recovery from ACL and MCL injuries sustained in the 2024 season.
As frustrations mounted, Aiyuk eventually cut off communication with the organization, effectively ending any possibility of a return during the 2025 campaign.
According to one NFL insider, a release remains the most likely outcome.
"I talked to two rival executives who believe that he's simply untradeable right now; that it's going to be hard to move on because of the knee issue, didn't play at all last year," ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said Sunday on SportsCenter, via Bleacher Report. "He's kind of ghosted the 49ers at times; they haven't really had a lot of communication with him."
Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million contract before the 2024 season, further complicating the situation. The deal has become a significant obstacle to any potential trade, as teams have shown little interest in assuming the contract.
The lack of communication between Aiyuk and the 49ers has also made it difficult for interested teams to determine whether he would be willing to restructure the agreement.
"And then you've got the contract," Fowler continued. "So, if he is released at some point this summer, the 49ers have a clear runway that can save about $20 million on the cap. There would be interest at that point, certainly; maybe they can salvage a trade. Probably not is my feeling right now."
The 49ers are under no immediate pressure to make a decision. An option bonus isn't due to Aiyuk until September 1, giving the team time to remain patient and evaluate its options. There is also no urgency tied to helping the receiver acclimate to a new team before training camp.
"Hopefully, we can get something for it," head coach Kyle Shanahan said in March. "I know we're in no rush to do that. You've got to do what's right for the Niners. You're not trying to hook up some other team as fast as you possibly can. Hopefully, we can get something for that, and it will take care of itself."
