It raised some eyebrows when a report surfaced that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offered Mike Evans more money than the San Francisco 49ers in free agency. Still, the veteran wide receiver chose a change of scenery as he enters his 13th NFL season.

For Evans, the decision wasn't just about finances—it was driven by the competitive fire that has fueled him throughout his career and a desire to prove himself in a new environment.


Appearing on the Real Ones: The League podcast with new teammate Fred Warner, Evans discussed what led him to leave the only team he had known at the NFL level.

"I've just been extremely blessed, bro," Evans told Warner. "I really have, to be in this position, and to stay healthy. I've always had that competitiveness in me, since I was a kid. So that's really what it is. I'm trying to prove people wrong and prove myself right. So that's what this is about."

Evans has been one of the NFL's most consistent receivers, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 seasons. His only dip came last year, when injuries limited him to eight games.

"It was unfortunate, but it kind of gave me a second wind," Evans said. "I'm a little bit fresher than I have been in years past, this offseason, and I'm trying to use all the juice I've got."

Now 32, Evans is motivated to show that last season was an anomaly—not a sign of decline. He believes playing under head coach Kyle Shanahan provides the ideal opportunity to do just that.


"I'm just excited to come out to San Francisco and play for such a historic franchise," Evans said. "I've been looking at that franchise for a long time, and obviously, it was hard for me to leave Tampa, but I'm super excited to come out there. And this is what I feel like I needed at this point in my career."

Evans also acknowledged that his long-term goals—including being inducted into the Hall of Fame—factored into the decision.

"I feel like it could help me get to where I want to go post-career," he said, suggesting that his already impressive résumé might look even better with a history-rich franchise added to it. "I never take things for granted, and never assume."

Over his career, Evans has totaled 866 receptions for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns. He believes his addition can help the 49ers attain their championship goal.

"Y'all already had a really good offense," Evans added. "I just feel like I can be that piece to take it to the next level."
