Instead, Evans is expected to wear No. 5 in his first season with San Francisco, according to his jersey listing on Fanatics. The number could be a nod to his high school days in Galveston, Texas.
Update: During an interview on Fred Warner's podcast, Evans confirmed he will wear No. 5 with the 49ers.
Evans enters his 13th NFL season with an impressive résumé. The 49ers are adding a proven veteran who has recorded 866 receptions for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns. He eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in all but one season of his career, falling short only last year during an injury-shortened campaign.
The addition has already generated excitement within the locker room. Running back Christian McCaffrey recently shared his enthusiasm about Evans joining a 49ers offense that ranked seventh in total yards last season despite dealing with multiple injuries.
"I was so fired up, man," McCaffrey said. "He's somebody that, if you're a fan of football, you've watched his entire career, and it's hard not to like the guy. He's a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He's somebody that, in my opinion, has never gotten enough credit, and I think he plays that way. He plays with a chip on his shoulder."
