Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area believes the San Francisco 49ers—currently holding just six selections in the 2026 NFL Draft—could benefit from trading down to acquire additional draft capital. The roster still has several depth needs, yet the team owns only two picks within the first three rounds and none beyond the fourth.

Maiocco proposes a trade that would likely spark strong reactions among the fan base, as it involves helping a division rival. He suggests the 49ers deal their first-round pick (No. 27 overall) to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a package that includes the No. 34 overall pick (second round), No. 104 (fourth round), and No. 143 (fifth round).


Such a move would increase San Francisco's total to eight draft picks, giving the team more flexibility to address multiple roster holes.

"They have an opening to add a starter at left guard and, perhaps, safety," Maiocco wrote. "The 49ers also need to add significant contributors along the defensive line, beginning with another player or two who can get after the quarterback. The 49ers can also add at wide receiver, tight end, and cornerback."

While the 49ers would gain valuable draft assets, the Cardinals could position themselves to land a quarterback—Maiocco suggests Alabama standout Ty Simpson—with a higher first-round selection.

Although dropping out of the first round may frustrate some fans, the move could aid San Francisco's long-term roster-building strategy.

"The deal could be the ultimate win-win," Maiocco wrote. "The Cardinals could secure their quarterback while the 49ers could gain some much-needed, top-level, young talent."
