"A resolution has not been easy and Williams is frustrated with the process," Rapoport wrote. "He's due $32M in salary with a $38M+ cap number."
Meanwhile, Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom recently reported that several around the league believe the Kansas City Chiefs would be eager to pursue Williams if he becomes available.
Williams will turn 38 before the 2026 NFL season, but he remains one of the league's premier offensive linemen. Still, questions linger about how long he can maintain his elite level as he navigates the latter stage of his career.
The veteran left tackle also holds significant leverage in negotiations. The 49ers currently do not appear to have a clear successor in place, and losing Williams would be a major blow to an offensive line that has often taken a backseat in the team's roster-building priorities.
Williams started 16 games during the 2025 season. His 91.1 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus marked the fifth time in the past six seasons he has earned a grade of at least 91.1 from the analytics site.
Across 668 pass-blocking snaps in 2025, Williams allowed 40 pressures and four sacks.
