NFL Media writer Matt Okada recently identified 10 potential free-agent reunions that make sense, including a pairing between the 49ers and former Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints linebacker Kaden Elliss.
"Over the last two seasons, 18 players have logged 250+ tackles," Okada wrote. "Only one of those 18 players has logged at least 8.0 sacks, 20 QB hits or 60 QB pressures in that span … and he hit all three. Falcons linebacker Kaden Elliss is, as Gregg Rosenthal put it, 'one of the most underrated players of his generation … [and] one of the best pass-rushing linebackers in football.'"
Elliss could offer more than just production. He also brings familiarity. His head coach over the past two seasons was Raheem Morris, now part of San Francisco's coaching staff.
"And of course, Elliss' head coach the last two years was blitz-wizard Raheem Morris, who is now the defensive coordinator in San Francisco," Okada noted.
That connection could ease a transition to the 49ers' defensive scheme.
Elliss has recorded 20.5 career sacks, all within the past five seasons, including 12.5 over the last three years. In 2025, he posted an 84.6 pass-rush grade from Pro Football Focus — higher than any 49ers defender with more than five pass-rush attempts.
He has logged at least 107 tackles in each of the past three seasons, including a career-high 151 tackles two years ago with Atlanta.
"The 49ers logged the fewest sacks and second-lowest pressure rate in the league in 2025," Okada added, "and while they primarily need help on the edges, it wouldn't hurt to pick up an off-ball linebacker with pass-rushing chops. Pairing him with Fred Warner could significantly improve a defense that's been slipping in recent years."
Spotrac estimates Elliss' market value at about $9 million annually, and believes the linebacker could earn a three-year, $26.97 million deal in free agency.
As Elliss enters his eighth NFL season, the 49ers must weigh experience against their goal of infusing an aging roster with younger talent. Still, for a defense that struggled with consistency and pass-rush production in 2025, a proven veteran like Elliss could provide immediate impact.
