The San Francisco 49ers and All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams have yet to make progress in ongoing contract negotiations, according to a new report from NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Last week, reports surfaced that the 49ers and Williams were locked in a contract standoff, with the possibility of a release not entirely off the table. Williams is scheduled to carry a cap hit of more than $38 million in 2026 — a figure the 49ers would likely prefer to lower.


Speaking on Good Morning Football, Garafolo indicated that little has changed since then.

"From my understanding, there's been no progress since last week, when the 49ers talked about the optimism that they would get a new deal with Williams to remain with the 49ers heading into this upcoming season," Garafolo said. "So there's still work that needs to be done there in the next couple of days to make sure that Williams does not hit the market."

Williams, however, reportedly remains confident in his value should negotiations break down.

"If he does (hit the market), there's going to be interest, and my understanding is he still believes he's got at least two, three good years left in that body, and he's certainly playing like it," Garafolo added.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last week, 49ers general manager John Lynch was optimistic when addressing the situation.


"Well, what I'll tell you is that, in recent weeks, I've met with both Trent and with his agent, Vincent Taylor, and had really good, productive, and substantive meetings," Lynch said. "And so, here's what I know: Trent loves being a Niner. We love having Trent as a Niner. And it's up to us to figure that out, and to thread that needle."

Lynch did acknowledge that certain factors complicate negotiations, including Williams' age.

"There's some unique circumstances in that we all know what Trent is as a player, how great of a player he's been," Lynch said. "He's gonna be 38 years old, and so, there's some things that go into that, but I think we're all on the same page, and I feel very positive about where that's going."

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Williams continues to perform at an elite level. He started 16 games in 2025, earning a 91.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. It marked the fifth time in the past six seasons that the 49ers' left tackle has posted a grade of at least 91.0.
