"The San Francisco 49ers are seemingly one of a dozen teams in play for Crosby, whom the Las Vegas Raiders would move for a couple of draft picks (it doesn't seem like they can get two first-rounders) and a player," Barrows and Tafur wrote.
Earlier reports suggested the Raiders hoped for a return comparable to a blockbuster deal involving Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys — a package that included two first-round picks and a player. However, that kind of haul is unlikely for Crosby.
The 49ers currently hold the No. 27 overall pick in the first round and face multiple roster needs this offseason. Other teams may be better positioned to assemble more competitive trade packages.
Barrows and Tafur added, "The 49ers pick 27th in the draft, which looks to be a good spot to address their receivers need if Crosby goes elsewhere."
Mac Jones market not as strong as anticipated
While Crosby's name generated trade buzz, 49ers backup quarterback Mac Jones was also expected to draw significant interest at the Combine. However, Barrows and Tafur report that Jones' trade market has not developed as robustly as some anticipated.
Several quarterback-needy teams may be hesitant to trade for Jones and then face a potential contract extension, instead opting for cheaper alternatives.
"The Vikings are said to be considering Anthony Richardson, Kyler Murray, and Geno Smith — the last two of which are expected to be cut — as well as Kirk Cousins and Tua Tagovailoa to come in and compete with J.J. McCarthy," Barrows and Tafur wrote. "If the Arizona Cardinals can't land [Malik] Willis, they might even turn to Jimmy Garoppolo, who has ties with new coach Mike LaFleur."
There remain skeptics when it comes to Jones' long-term ceiling.
Barrows and Tafur noted, "Though Jones was very sharp last season, completing 70 percent of his passes in eight starts, there are still some skeptics."
