With key decisions looming, the 49ers could see significant changes to their receiving corps in the coming weeks.
Will Jauan Jennings return to the 49ers?
Wide receiver Jauan Jennings is among several 49ers wideouts scheduled to hit free agency. After carving out a key role in San Francisco's offense, Jennings is expected to draw strong interest on the open market, potentially pricing himself out of the 49ers' plans.
Still, Lynch did not shut the door on a possible return.
"Jauan's a free agent, and we've been in good contact with Jauan," Lynch said. "We'll see where that goes."
49ers have confidence in the receiver room
Of course, Lynch also expressed confidence in the team's young receivers.
"We've got some young players that we really need to come to the forefront," Lynch said. "Jacob Cowing's a guy that we've had, and we like, for a couple of years. He hasn't been able to be on the field much because of his hamstring ailments."
Then there is Ricky Pearsall, the team's first-round draft pick in 2024, who struggled through injuries this past season.
"Ricky's a fantastic player," Lynch said. "We've got to find a way to keep him healthy. He had a tough injury early, and he kept dinging the same thing over and over. It was a tough year for him. Ricky's going to be a fine player.
"Jordan Watkins has to take big steps, and then we've got opportunities to improve ourselves by either bringing back some of the players who have been with us, or go finding new guys that fit who we want to be and what we want to be, both in free agency and in the draft."
When will a Brandon Aiyuk decision come?
The situation surrounding Brandon Aiyuk remains unresolved.
Lynch previously stated that Aiyuk has likely played his final snaps for the 49ers. The veteran wide receiver was working his way back from ACL and MCL injuries suffered in October 2024 and was initially expected to return during the 2025 season. That return, however, never materialized.
The situation grew more complicated when Aiyuk reportedly cut off communication with the 49ers, leading the team to place him on the reserve/left squad list — a designation typically used for players who plan to retire or have quit their team.
While no immediate roster move is expected, a resolution could come soon.
"I think nothing will happen until the new league year starts," Lynch said. "And then, when it happens, kind of semantics. But that's when something could happen there."
The 49ers are reportedly holding out hope that a trade market for Aiyuk could still develop. Though that seems unlikely given the uncertainty with the receiver.
"Who knows?" Lynch told reporters. "Maybe someone this week will have some interest."
