If the 49ers followed this path, it would mark their third investment in an interior defensive lineman in the past two drafts. San Francisco selected Alfred Collins in the second round and CJ West in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. However, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Collins and West finished as the 49ers' two lowest-graded players, each earning a surprisingly low 35.0 defensive grade.
"The 49ers added depth along the defensive line last year, drafting Alfred Collins and C.J. West in the middle rounds, though neither made a significant impact," Aaron wrote. "Outside of the rookies, established talent is limited."
Aaron believes McDonald would represent a notable upgrade. He earned an 86.5 overall defensive grade from PFF during his final season at Ohio State, including an elite 91.2 run-defense grade. That profile aligns with the 49ers' recent emphasis on strengthening the defensive trenches and improving the run defense.
In 14 games last season, McDonald recorded 65 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, one pass breakup, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
"McDonald consistently held his ground against double teams at Ohio State, showing his ability to plug rushing lanes," Aaron added. "His leverage and interior disruption should allow him to contribute immediately."
The 2026 NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 23, in Pittsburgh.
