Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently evaluated every NFL team's quarterback situation entering the 2026 season, and the San Francisco 49ers were listed among the most stable—largely because of the strength of Brock Purdy's play.

In the feature, PFF's John Kosko ranked each team's quarterback need, placing the 49ers at No. 25. Purdy played at a high level in 2025, and backup Mac Jones also performed well when called upon, leaving San Francisco with little urgency at the position.

While Kosko acknowledges the perception that head coach Kyle Shanahan's scheme plays a significant role in his quarterbacks' success, he also emphasizes that Purdy has exceeded the production of his predecessors.

"While many argue that the 49ers' system — driven largely by Kyle Shanahan's playcalling and scheme — can elevate almost any quarterback, what Brock Purdy has done above and beyond previous signal-callers, most notably Jimmy Garoppolo, warrants praise," Kosko wrote.

Additionally, Kosko makes an interesting comparison between Purdy and another quarterback who is widely considered among the NFL's best.

"Over the past three seasons, Purdy's 90.6 PFF overall grade is tied for eighth in the NFL alongside Patrick Mahomes," Kosko wrote. "Purdy doesn't possess Mahomes' arm talent or off-script playmaking ability, but he wins with mastery of the system, strong accuracy, and an ability to consistently limit negative plays."

That's high praise for a 49ers quarterback who often finds himself the subject of media scrutiny, particularly after San Francisco signed Purdy to a lucrative contract extension last offseason, placing him among the NFL's highest-paid players.

Unfortunately, Purdy's 2025 campaign was shortened by a turf toe injury, limiting him to nine regular-season starts. Even so, he finished 7–2 as a starter, throwing for 2,167 yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while posting a 100.5 passer rating—the third time he has reached that mark in his four-year NFL career.

To be fair, Purdy's postseason performance was less efficient. In two playoff appearances, Purdy recorded a 68.3 passer rating, throwing for 402 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Still, PFF's evaluation underscores Purdy's consistency within Shanahan's offense, and bodes well for the 49ers' future.
