Fred Warner was thrilled last year when Robert Saleh returned to the San Francisco 49ers as defensive coordinator, reuniting the All-Pro linebacker with his first—and safe to assume, favorite—defensive coach in the NFL.

Unfortunately, Warner appeared in just six games under Saleh this season before suffering a dislocated and fractured right ankle. Now, with Saleh once again drawing significant interest from head-coach-needy teams around the league, his second stint in San Francisco could be short-lived.


Warner spoke with reporters Monday as 49ers players cleaned out their lockers following a season-ending playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks. When asked what it would be like to potentially lose Saleh again to a head coaching opportunity, Warner didn't mince words.

"It would suck a lot. It would suck a lot," Warner said with a laugh. "Of course, I always think about Saleh the man, and the relationship that we have. And of course, I want him to have that opportunity again."

Still, Warner made it clear his preference would be for Saleh to remain with the 49ers, giving the defense more time to build under his leadership.

"But selfishly, of course, I want him to stay here as well and have a chance at going and winning this thing next season," Warner added. "But we'll see. Time will tell."

The Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and Tennessee Titans have all reportedly expressed interest in Saleh, and the veteran defensive coordinator has already interviewed with several teams. However, the Falcons have hired Kevin Stefanski, and the Dolphins are expected to hire Jeff Hafley, narrowing the list of potential suitors.


With this hiring cycle far from over, Saleh's future with the 49ers remains uncertain. For Warner and San Francisco's defense, the hope is that continuity wins out—but the decision may soon be out of their hands.
