That scenario came into clearer focus Thursday night when the Seahawks defeated the Los Angeles Rams, setting up an intriguing final stretch to the regular season.

For now, however, the 49ers are keeping their attention on what's immediately in front of them.


San Francisco begins its push Monday night against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. A win would clinch a playoff berth, making it a true win-and-you're-in scenario. That's where the team's focus remains—not on the possibilities that could unfold in the weeks ahead.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday on Bay Area radio station KNBR that he tuned into the Rams-49ers game in the fourth quarter, watching from the team facility after hearing reactions down the hallway. Once he turned it on, he couldn't look away, following the action, including the dramatic overtime finish.

Still, Shanahan explained that he rarely discusses league-wide implications with his players or how other results affect the 49ers. The team, he said, prefers to operate with a week-to-week mindset.

However, that approach could change if circumstances align in the final week of the season.

"One time I will clarify is, if we control our own destiny, going into the last game versus Seattle, then I'll probably talk about it," Shanahan said. "But I know that that was a big deal with the Rams losing that, to where we do control it, and so does Seattle. But I know if we don't win on Monday, that ends very fast. And then it'll be the same thing the next Sunday versus Chicago, if we end up handling business.


"So, it's one week at a time. When you get to that last week, and you're playing that game in Week [18], and you know what that means, whether it's the one seed, whether it's another seed, or whether it's just to get into the playoffs, that's when you really address to everybody exactly what the game means."

Quarterback Brock Purdy is on the same page as his coach. While he also watched Thursday night's game and understood its impact on his own team, Purdy emphasized that none of it matters unless the 49ers handle their own business.

"Obviously, it's nice, but we really do have to take it one day at a time because if we don't obviously take care of business this week, then none of that matters," Purdy said. "So for us, it's how can we continue to get better, just even this week at practice, handle business on Monday, and make that everything right now. So that's where we have to be."

For the 49ers, the path to the top seed is still there—but only if they keep winning.
