The San Francisco 49ers have long expressed optimism about wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk returning to the field this season. That optimism appears to be fading. During a Tuesday morning interview on Bay Area radio station KNBR, general manager John Lynch was asked whether it's still realistic to expect Aiyuk to return in 2025.

Lynch paused before delivering an unexpectedly cautious response.


"Realistic? I'm not sure," Lynch said. "Hopeful? Yeah. So, I think that's kind of where I'd leave that. He continues to rehab, and hopefully, that's, like I've always said, we're a better football team when Brandon's out there, and I hope that's the case.

"But I think that's probably what it is—is hope right now. And I wish it were a little bit more than that."

Aiyuk is still recovering from the ACL and MCL injuries he suffered last season, and the 49ers have yet to open his practice window. With only four regular-season games remaining, time is running out for a potential return.

Despite the uncertainty, Lynch voiced confidence in the 49ers' current wide receiver group. He also emphasized that the organization still wants Aiyuk to remain part of its long-term plans, even after the team voided his guaranteed money for 2026—an offseason move that surfaced publicly only recently.

"We're hopeful that Brandon's a part of us," Lynch continued. "I hope that's never an issue because the hope is that Brandon's back with us, and we're moving forward with him as one of our core players."


Although the contract adjustment took place in July, the news didn't break until recently. Lynch was asked whether the recent report strained the relationship or communication with Aiyuk.

"I don't necessarily know that the reporting was an inflection point, but I think, the entire time, it hadn't been great," Lynch admitted. "And so, you do your best to rectify those things, and then, everyone's got to be professionals and conduct themselves in that manner. And so, that's how we treat all our players. And we have great relationships with our players. We've had a great relationship with Brandon, and we look forward to that continuing."

Quarterback Brock Purdy also joined KNBR on Tuesday morning and shared his honest thoughts on the Aiyuk situation.

"He's going through his thing, and I can't really speak to it much, just because it's his situation, and him healing up from his knee injury," Purdy said. "And then, all the contract stuff, I'm totally out of that. That has nothing to do, really, with me, or I haven't had any impact on that, so I can't speak to that.

"But I just think it does suck because I love B.A. and all the moments that we've had on the field together have been awesome. And I love playing football with him. And so, it sort of sucks right now. It's sort of all gray, and we don't really know, I guess, what's going on.


"But he's doing his thing. I know he is rehabbing and trying to get back. And so, that's all I can really say to it."

As the 49ers push toward the postseason, Aiyuk's status remains one of the team's most pressing uncertainties—both for the stretch run and for the future.
