The NFL has issued a ruling on Monday night's altercation between the San Francisco 49ers and the Carolina Panthers. Safety Tre'von Moehrig has been suspended one game without pay for unsportsmanlike conduct stemming from his strike on 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

Late in the game, Moehrig delivered a below-the-belt hit on Jennings, sparking post-game tension. After the final whistle, Jennings sought out Moehrig on the field and retaliated by striking him in the head.

Personnel and players quickly stepped in to restrain Jennings as he continued trying to get to Moehrig. While Moehrig has been suspended, the NFL is likely still reviewing Jennings' actions and could issue a fine.

"During the fourth quarter, Moehrig punched San Francisco wide receiver Jauan Jennings at the end of a play, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to 'any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,' including, among others, 'throwing a punch, or a forearm, or kicking at an opponent,'" the NFL said via a statement.

Moehrig can appeal.

"TV gonna tell you what happened, man," Jennings told reporters in the locker room. "I was just responding to, to me, some childish behavior. That's all it was."

Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't mince words, openly backing his receiver.

"Yeah, the guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls," Shanahan said. "I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there, and getting to the sideline."
