The team also has rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who remains on the non-football injury list after undergoing ACL surgery in January. While Rourke is unlikely to see the field this season, Shanahan hasn't ruled out the possibility of him practicing with the team later this year.
"Yeah, we'll open up his window eventually to give him three weeks of practice and decide what to do from there," Shanahan said.
Similar to a player on injured reserve, the 49ers can open a practice window for Rourke, giving them 21 days to decide whether to activate him to the roster. The team could also use the window to allow Rourke to practice and then return him to the injury list after the deadline.
Regarding Martinez, Shanahan added, "We're waiting to see if he clears waivers, to see if he's an option to bring back on practice squad."
Martinez served as Mac Jones' backup while Purdy was sidelined with a turf toe injury.
