ESPN's Adam Schefter isn't the only one questioning whether the San Francisco 49ers should make a quarterback switch once Brock Purdy is healthy. Mac Jones has played well in Purdy's absence, helping the 49ers reach a 6-3 record, and if he defeats the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, it could spark more debate about whether a change is necessary.

Add FOX Sports' Tom Brady to the list of those weighing in. During FOX's NFL pregame show, the seven-time Super Bowl champion was asked if the 49ers should stick with Jones even after Purdy is cleared to return.


Brady hesitated at first but ultimately gave a candid answer.

"Listen, you've got to go with the hot hand," Brady said. "Yes. Yes, you stay with him (Jones). I've got to believe that's why I'm still sitting here today, because they went with the hot hand about 25 years ago. What do you guys expect me to say?"


Jones will make his eighth NFL start on Sunday in a critical NFC West showdown that could have major playoff implications. A victory over the Rams would keep the 49ers undefeated in divisional play and strengthen their push for the NFC West crown.

On Sunday morning, Schefter echoed a similar sentiment on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown: "If he happens to win that game, I can't imagine that you're taking him off the field next week at Arizona, even though they are hopeful to have back Purdy then."

Despite the mounting discussion, head coach Kyle Shanahan has repeatedly stated that Brock Purdy remains the team's starting quarterback once he's healthy.


"I mean, this is Brock's team," Shanahan said last week. "If Brock's good to go and everything, and can play like Brock, there's no decision to be made. It's just nice, as we go through this with Brock—the uncertainty of the toe—it is cool to have someone playing as good as Mac is."
