This marks Ferrell's second stint with the team. He started all 17 games during the 2023 season for the 49ers, giving him familiarity with some of the personnel and the defensive scheme. That experience increases his chances of seeing the field on Sunday against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.
As for White, head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that fans can expect to see him in action.
"Cle, we'd have to activate, so we'll have that decision [by] tomorrow," Shanahan explained. "But I expect Keion, yes. A chance with Cle."
So, how big of "a chance" does Ferrell have to be elevated from the practice squad after just a few practices with the team? According to Shanahan, they're probably pretty good—largely due to the 49ers' injury situation.
"I mean, we're real low on numbers, so everyone has a chance," Shanahan said. "We have guys that are questionable, guys that have been banged up."
Two defensive ends—Bryce Huff (hamstring) and Yetur Gross-Matos (knee, hamstring)—have already been ruled out. Additionally, defensive end Sam Okuayinonu (ankle) and defensive tackle Jordan Elliott (ankle) are questionable for Sunday's game.
"But also, just separating that, we're real familiar with Cle," Shanahan added. "He looked really good in all three of these practices, so if it makes sense for our 48 (players allowed on game day), then no doubt about it."
With the 49ers dealing with multiple injuries along the defensive line, both White and Ferrell could play crucial roles in the team's Week 9 matchup against the Giants.
