Brendel suffered a hamstring injury and was quickly ruled out, with veteran lineman Matt Hennessy stepping in at center. Green exited with a toe injury, was initially listed as questionable, and was replaced by Darrell Luter Jr. However, the 49ers later ruled him out.
Shanahan acknowledged Brendel could miss time but expressed confidence in his return.
"It sucks losing Jake," Shanahan said. "He's been a stud for us. I got a lot of respect for Jake and how much he's helped us. It's just a hamstring, so I know he'll be back soon, but it always does take some time. But it's nice to have Hennessy step up and play well, too."
As for Green, Shanahan was less certain about a timetable. When asked if the injury resembled turf toe, he replied, "It's a toe, so we'll see. Not sure. Possibly."
Matt Hennessy earns praise in relief
Shanahan was clearly impressed with Hennessy's performance in place of Brendel. However, he wasn't too surprised by the offensive lineman's ability to step into the role.
"I thought Hennessy had a real good off-season with us," Shanahan said. "I really enjoyed him throughout OTAs and training camp. I didn't notice anything go bad when Brendel went out. So, Hennessy must have been ready for the opportunity, went in there, and allowed the offense to keep going, made the right calls. I'm sure he blocked well because of the results that we had."
With Brendel's status uncertain, the 49ers may need to rely on Hennessy when they face the Houston Texans next Sunday. Based on his performance against the Falcons, the offense looks capable of maintaining its rhythm with him at center.
