I had the honor of interviewing 49ers legend Patrick Willis ahead of this week's community event at Delancey Street Restaurant in San Francisco, hosted by the 49ers and Pepsi. The event supports Delancey Street's mission of empowering individuals to rebuild their lives through meaningful work and service.


During our conversation, Patrick shared his thoughts on community and what drives him beyond the game of football. His humility and gratitude shined through as he spoke about giving back and finding purpose after an incredible NFL career.


Patrick's humility and passion for giving back were evident throughout our conversation. Internally, I was taken aback when he said, "I'm glad to be on here, let's have some fun" — a simple but genuine moment that spoke volumes about his character.

Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis is teaming up with the 49ers and Pepsi for a community event this Wednesday at Delancey Street Restaurant in San Francisco. The event will celebrate local businesses that are making a positive impact and highlight Delancey Street's mission of helping individuals rebuild their lives through meaningful work.

When Willis learned about the initiative, he didn't hesitate to get involved.


"When Pepsi and the Bay Area Bites team reached out and told me about the program — how it highlights local restaurants and businesses that are helping the community — I was all in," Willis said. "I've always believed in giving back because the community was good to me. And when you hear about all the positive things Delancey Street is doing through its foundation, it's amazing. You can't help but want to be part of it."

Founded in 1971, Delancey Street Foundation is widely regarded as one of the nation's leading residential self-help organizations for people who have hit bottom — including those with histories of substance abuse, incarceration, or homelessness. Through education and on-the-job training, Delancey Street provides residents with the tools to rebuild their lives from the ground up.

That mission resonates deeply with Willis, who majored in criminal justice and has long advocated for second chances.

"Delancey Street helps people who might have faced challenges in the past get a second chance and that's something I really believe in," Willis said. "It's not always about the people at the top — it's about the people behind the scenes making a difference.

Willis also expressed admiration for Delancey Street's longtime leadership, including co-founder Mimi Silbert.


"Once you meet someone like Ms. Mimi, who's been there since the beginning, you really understand what makes this place special," Willis said. "When you come out on Wednesday, you'll feel the love and the energy. Come have some fun with me, Sourdough Sam, and the Gold Rush — take some pictures, enjoy the food, and learn more about what Delancey Street is doing.

While the event focuses on community, Willis also took a moment to reflect on his connection to the Bay Area and the 49ers.

"The Bay Area will always be special because it embraced me from the start," he said. "The fans, the people — it's a place that truly supports those who give back. I'm grateful for that."

Asked about the 49ers' current season and linebacker Fred Warner's recent injury, Willis shared his perspective.

"You just can't replace a guy like Fred," Willis said. "He's been a constant All-Pro, one of the best in the league, and was having an incredible season. But in football, it's always 'next man up.' That's the mentality you have to have — this is the moment.


Ten years into retirement, Willis said the lessons of football continue to shape his life.

"Don't let the opinions of others become your reality," he said. "See what you want for yourself and go after it, even if it doesn't look perfect at first. You can't cheat the grind — it always knows what you put in."

Through this event and his ongoing work in the community, Willis hopes to inspire others to take action and stay connected.

"People matter. The Bay Area matters," he said. "I'm grateful to have been part of this community, and I just want people to see that I'm still here, still showing up, and still trying to do positive things. I'll always be thankful for the love this community has shown me."

The 49ers and Pepsi Community Lunch with Patrick Willis will take place on Wednesday, October 15, at 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. at Delancey Street Restaurant, 600 Embarcadero, San Francisco. The event is free and open to the public.
