According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the toe injury is expected to sideline Purdy for two to five weeks. When asked about that timeline last week, general manager John Lynch emphasized that the 49ers are taking it week by week.
"What we're dealing with is kind of a week-to-week thing," Lynch said. "That's our information. Brock's doing well, coming back from it, and we'll just treat it as such. He's doing a nice job, doing everything he can to get back out there as soon as possible. And so, that's where we're at."
On Sunday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter provided a somewhat more encouraging update than Rapoport's reported timeline. While the 49ers remain cautious, Schefter reported that Purdy's return in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals isn't entirely out of the question. However, the team is not overly optimistic about the possibility, but Purdy has shown noticeable progress in his recovery.
"We'll see for next week," one source told Schefter. "Next week will be tight, but he progressed a lot this week."
In the meantime, veteran quarterback Mac Jones will start in Purdy's absence, beginning with Sunday's Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
This season was supposed to mark Purdy's first opportunity to start a full year under center for San Francisco. In May, he secured his future with the team by signing a five-year, $265 million contract extension, keeping him with the 49ers through the 2030 season.
