The 49ers are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 6-11 finish in 2024, a year derailed by injuries across the roster. Perhaps the most significant blow came on offense, as star running back Christian McCaffrey was limited to just four games. The good news for San Francisco is that McCaffrey has remained healthy throughout the offseason, and the team expects him to be a significant factor this year.
While the 49ers traded Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings, they acquired Brian Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders in a key offseason move. Robinson brings experience, toughness, and dependability—giving San Francisco a reliable backup who can step into the starting role if needed.
Behind McCaffrey and Robinson are second-year back Isaac Guerendo and rookie Jordan James.
The addition of Robinson should also allow the 49ers to manage McCaffrey's workload more effectively, increasing his chances of staying healthy throughout the season. Of course, as Lynch noted, that's easier said than done.
"We always talk about that," Lynch said. "We're not so good at executing it because he doesn't like coming off the field. But that'd be a great problem to have. And I'll tell you what I'm excited about. I'm excited about Christian being out there. Obviously, I'm excited about B. Rob. I'm excited about Guerendo, and I'm excited about Jordan James. I think that position group was strengthened this offseason in general, and I think all those players can bring something to the table.
"Jordan James has had a tough training camp—nicked his knee early in camp and broke a finger. But he is a tough, really good football player. So, I think all these guys, we're going to see them contribute at some point during the year. Obviously, our bell cow, one of the better players in the league in Christian, and having him healthy is just a godsend for our team. He looks tremendous."
Adding Robinson only fuels the excitement. The former Commanders running back has rushed for at least 733 yards in each of his three NFL seasons, averaging 4.3 yards per carry with eight rushing touchdowns in 2024. His proven production gives San Francisco much-needed depth.
Robinson has wasted no time fitting in, quickly earning praise for his smooth adjustment to the 49ers' system.
"B. Rob, he's an impressive-looking guy," Lynch said. "And I think what's been so impressive is how quickly he's taken to what we do. Kyle's (head coach Kyle Shanahan) been pretty upfront about what his expectations are for him. It's a nice issue to have, [figuring out] how we're going to deploy all those weapons, but I think that position group is really going to be a strength of our team."
With McCaffrey healthy, Robinson ready to contribute, and young talent like Guerendo and James waiting in the wings, the 49ers believe they've built the depth needed to withstand whatever challenges the 2025 season brings.
