San Francisco has shown it won't use an early draft pick to reach for an offensive tackle who doesn't fit Kyle Shanahan's scheme, even with an obvious need. But with Williams now 37 and McKivitz set to hit free agency, the front office may have no choice but to secure a future cornerstone on the offensive line.
Wilson has the 49ers selecting Auburn offensive tackle Xavier Chaplin with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
"In pass protection, Chaplin flashes power and athleticism, anchors well, though he'll need to tidy up his footwork at the next level," Wilson wrote. "He's a powerful run-blocker who excels at combo blocks, and locking up second-level defenders."
At 6-foot-7 and 348 pounds, Chaplin is a massive presence who has played exclusively at left tackle during his college career. His size and skill set could allow him to eventually take over the blindside role in San Francisco for years to come.
In 2024, Chaplin earned a 70.4 run-blocking grade and a career-high 72.8 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, allowing just two sacks and 13 pressures across 607 snaps. He allowed one pressure in 70 offensive snaps (27 pass-blocking snaps) against Baylor on Friday.
Chaplin's résumé includes All-American honors in 2023 and an honorable mention All-ACC selection in 2024, making him one of the most intriguing offensive line prospects in next year's draft class.
