San Francisco has been searching for reliable options at wide receiver. The team was reportedly interested in veteran Amari Cooper, who chose to sign a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Brandon Aiyuk remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Jauan Jennings is still recovering from a calf injury with no clear timetable for his return, rookie Jordan Watkins suffered a high-ankle sprain during the preseason, and Jacob Cowing is sidelined with a torn hamstring.
The 49ers did acquire Skyy Moore in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, but he is expected to contribute primarily on special teams. In March, San Francisco signed veteran Demarcus Robinson to add experience to the wide receiver room, but the NFL suspended him for the first three games of the season for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
Valdes-Scantling, 30, entered the league as a fifth-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2018. The 6-foot-4, 206-pound receiver led the league in 2020 with 20.9 yards per catch. He later signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Chiefs in 2022, where he was part of two Super Bowl championship runs.
The veteran spent time with the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints in 2024 before joining the Seahawks earlier this year. Over his seven NFL seasons, Valdes-Scantling has amassed 3,566 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns, averaging 17.4 yards per catch across his career.
The 49ers likely hope the addition of Valdes-Scantling provides quarterback Brock Purdy, whom the team heavily invested in this offseason, with another potential weapon on offense.
San Francisco opens its 2025 season on September 7 against the Seattle Seahawks, giving Valdes-Scantling an early opportunity to face his former team.
